Tommy Van Scoy lives by these words. His values are reflected in everything he does. Born into a jeweler’s family, he got his first introduction into the diamond jewelry world when his father gifted him with a jeweler’s workbench at a young age of 14. His journey in the diamond jewelry business expanded from managing his father’s jewelry store to opening his own in Dallas, Pennsylvania, and there’s been no looking back ever since. A true people’s person, he goes above and beyond to ensure you have a piece of jewelry that you absolutely love.
Tommy lives and breathes diamonds. Having dealt with diamonds his whole life, he knows a diamond inside and out and how to tell two diamonds apart. This experience and knowledge didn’t come easily – it was years of hard work and dedication to become the best in this field that led him to where he is now. His story all began when he was born into a large family with 7 siblings. His father had his own jewelry store and when Tommy was just 14 years old, his father presented him with a jeweler’s workbench so that he could learn about gem sizing, how to set diamonds and more. When his father opened up a second store, Tommy was asked to manage the store while his own construction business closed for the winter. During this time, he forged a friendship with an Israeli man who invited him to visit his country to check out the quality of the diamonds there. He made a trip to Israel to learn about diamond purchasing from the source, and there was no looking back. This launched him into the world of diamond importing, and he spent the next 18 years traveling overseas to buy and sell diamonds. Traveling every 45 days was not easy, but Tommy made it work. In addition to this, in 1989 he was accepted into the NYDDC – Diamond Dealer’s Club, an exclusive club with only 2,000 members worldwide, at that time.
Over the years, Tommy taught himself all the facets of jewelry making – from sketching out a design, to hand carving a wax model and later, even rendering a 3D CAD image. In 1987, he became a certified diamond graduate from GIA, the world’s premier and largest nonprofit institute of gemological research and learning. In 1992, he opened his own store in Dallas, Pennsylvania. 12 years later, he moved his store to Wilkes-Barre. Sadly, the forces of nature visited in the form of a tornado, reducing the Wilkes-Barre jewelry store to rubble on 13th June 2018. But like the indomitable spirit that he is, Tommy went back to where he started, in Dallas, Pennsylvania.
Tommy believes that a strong will to succeed, a passion for what he does, and a thirst of knowledge will lead you to great heights. Each customer that enters his doors is given equal importance, and his reputation precedes him. Word-of-mouth advertising and referrals from loyal customers has seen his store weather through many storms, making it one of the finest names in Jewelry in the northeastern Pennsylvania region. When you walk into Tovon & Co., you will walk away with more than just a precious piece of jewelry. At the very least, you will walk away knowing more about diamonds than you could ever imagine. Tommy’s analogy is good old common sense. “If you need heart surgery, you go to a heart specialist. If you need a diamond, you should go to a diamond specialist” – That’s Tovon & Co. in Dallas, Pennsylvania.
